5 STEPS TO AN EFFECTIVE STRATEGIC PLAN

Library strategic planning should be more than copying and pasting from a previous plan or using boilerplate language. An individualized plan developed with clear objectivity is the key to mapping a path to a strong and successful future.

These 5 steps are critical to developing a quality strategic plan:

1. Review library performance across all areas. Identify what is working well and what could use attention.

1. Interview stakeholders and the public to understand needs and priorities. Make sure all populations have a voice.

  1. Assess community demographics and growth patterns to understand current and future state of the service area.

  2. Correlate and synthesize key findings and map to best practices. Understand peer libraries’ goals and performance.

  3. Identify goals, measurable objectives and timeline.
